Technology and Our Environment

A recent study by the National Safety Council reported that only about 11% of obsolete computers in the US were recycled. This study confirmed what many suspected – that relatively few old PCs are being recycled and that most are either stored or have met their end in municipal landfills or incinerators.

Computer equipment contains chemicals that when released into landfills can harm public health and the environment.

Did you know?
  • Plastics used in computers and monitors may contain hazardous flame retardants that are harmful to the environment.
  • Circuit boards contain hazardous substances such as mercury, cadmium, chromium, and lead.
  • Batteries in electronic equipment may contain lead, mercury, and cadmium. CRT Monitors may contain significant amounts of lead.
  • Flat-panel LCD displays contain mercury.
We urge you to help protect our environment by ensuring that your old equipment is reused or recycled.
