Troubleshooting suggestions before calling us:

Desktop Systems:

No boot:
  • Solid amber: GX260 = Power supply, everything else = Motherboard
  • Blinking amber: Power supply
  • Green and Amber, or light stays on for more than 2 minutes after unplugging = Power supply
  • Caps on GX270: Row behind the processor: Power Supply and motherboard
  • All other caps, only motherboard.
  • Strip to motherboard, power supply, processor if not POSTing to see if it will POST beep with Memory error, then try adding components to see if it will POST putting components in one in at a time.
Video:
  • Is there onboard video? If so, test it.
  • Does this only happen in Windows?
  • If can see BIOS screens, probably an OS problem.
  • Is it running DVI or VGA?
  • Do you have a KVM?
  • Any other components hooked to the system?
  • Try known good monitor and cables.
  • Try spare component if possible.
Drive issues:
  • Run full, non-interactive diags, get the error code.
  • Confirm what HDD they are using, make sure it matches the drive that was sent with the system.
  • See if they have more than one HDD and confirm which one is being replaced.
  • CD tray opening problems, make sure they can't open in BIOS as well to verify it's not a Windows problem
  • Floppy drive problems: try blowing out dust with compressed air; check if there is a disk in the drive.
  • If system POSTs but locks before Windows, check for disks and then check for USB drives. If removing USB drives fixes problem, go into BIOS and change to No Boot.
Other issues:
  • Fan stuck always at high speed:
  • Check heat in the room
  • GX280: Heatsink
  • Fans not spinning: If they're comfortable opening the case, check where the fan is connecting to the motherboard and make sure the connector is all the way down on the motherboard.
  • Fan cycling up and down is normal.
Portable Systems:
  • All 3 lock lights on for 2 seconds and then turn off, motherboard and processor
  • No power, make sure the light on the power brick is on, try with battery, without battery, borrow a battery/AC adapter if possible.
  • Flashing amber on battery is bad battery
  • 1, 3, 5 on battery flash is bad battery
  • Battery won't charge, go in BIOS, AC Adapter type: Unknown means wrong AC or bad AC adapter.
  • Mouse pointer wandering = bad pointer on keyboard, replace keyboard.
  • Video errors on laptop: check to see if it works on an external monitor
  • Drives running off USB, on a laptop make sure external power is hooked up too.
  • Docking station, check if it works in the dock, out of the dock.
Random lock ups: make sure there are no other PCI cards or anything else hooked into the system.

Blue screen: What is the exact wording on the screen?
Update the BIOS on anything that will complete POST.
